First David Drake Memorial Scholarship winner announced

Each summer adults come from all over the country to participate in ORDA’s Ice Skating Camps in June and August. This year the adults decided to give back to the community of Lake Placid by establishing a scholarship for a local Skating Club of Lake Placid skater. The scholarship is named after David Drake, an adult skater who loved Lake Placid and the ice skating camps. He was also a great fan to his friends and always supported them at competitions and shows. Unfortunately, David lost his battle with cancer and he is greatly missed. According to his friends, family and fellow skaters, David would be pleased to be associated with supporting a skaters dream and the community of Lake Placid. Therefore, it is our great pleasure to announce that the winner of the first David Drake Memorial Scholarship is Christie Sausa. The adult campers took their votes very seriously. They spent a lot of time considering their choice because all the applicants were winners and special in different ways. However, they were most impressed with Christie’s dedication to all aspects of the sport. Christie is presently working on her Senior Freestyle Test. What is particularly impressive is Christie’s generosity of spirit. She continuously supports other skaters by participating in the running of events. She volunteers, trial judges and is working towards her accounting appointment. WOW!!! Congratulations Christie. Keep up the good work.

Current and Retired SCLP Trophies

Ardelle Sanderson Awarded at The Summer Freestyle Competition to the Senior Ladies Freestyle winner.
Louisa Raymond Awarded at The Summer Freestyle Competition since 1986 to the Junior Men’s Freestyle winner. At some point in the 1990s the trophy disappeared and was not awarded again until 2006. Thus many of the winner names are missing. The SCLP and ORDA paid to have the trophy replaced and we listed as many winners as we were able to find results for.
Bobbi MacPhail Awarded at The Summer Freestyle Competition since 2004 for Intermediate Ladies Freestyle. Bobbi was an early member of the SCLP, a judge and an avid supporter of the club members and figure skating.
Nancy Archie Meyer Awarded at The International Synchronized Skating Competition to the winning Intermediate team. The award was started in 2004 for long time SCLP member, judge and faithful supporter of the SCLP and ORDA. The competition is usually held in January each year.
Nona Bafo Awarded at The International Synchronized Skating Competition to the Novice Team winner. Nona, along with the Skating Club of Buffalo and ORDA, started this competition in 1991. Nona traveled to Lake Placid often to judge competitions and tests.
Senior Dance Gold Dance Plaque Awarded at The Summer Dance Competition in August. This award goes back many years. The original plaque is full and SCLP purchased a new one in 2008.
Joe Carroll Challenge Trophy Awarded at The Summer Dance Competition to the Compulsory Junior Dance winner. This award is one of the oldest ones given by the SCLP. Joe Carroll was an ice dancer who ran all the ice dancing sessions in the 1940s. He was what you could call the original Major Domo of Ice Dancing when it was so popular here in the early years.
Ethel S. Brummer Awarded to the winners of Novice Dance at The Summer Dance Competition.
Noreen Kelly Awarded to the winners of Intermediate Free Dance at The Summer Dance Competition. This award was begun in 2004 in honor of Noreen Kelly, a very strong supporter of The Skating Club of Lake Placid, ORDA, and figure skating. She raised four daughters and a niece in Lake Placid, all of them skaters and Gold Medalists.
F. Ritter Shumway Awarded to the winners of The Adult Gold Dance Championship. Adults do not compete every year, but are listed when they do.
